I Play Hip-Hop To Keep The Lads Tip-Top Friday, Jun 13 2008

AS if being a football superstar is not enough. Wesley Sneijder is using Euro 2008 to become a superstar DJ too.

The Dutch playmaker, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Monday by dancing all over the top of World Champions Italy, was revealed yesterday as the secret weapon behind Holland’s explosive start to Group C.

With the special, if somewhat grudging, permission of manager Marco van Basten Sneijder has brought his own portable sound system to the team base and has created a mega-mix of thumping anthems to fire his side up for glory.

Sneijder let rip with his big set inside the Dutch dressing room before and after that jaw-dropping 3-0 romp over the Italians and yesterday this little party boy from Real Madrid was being hailed back in Holland as the glue which just might help keep van Basten’s group sticking together long enough to be crowned kings of Europe.

The Dutch have become notorious for self-destructive infighting but Sneijder is using his music to break with the old traditions and bring out a sense of unity in the squad. Sneijder, who will take centre stage in Berne tonight against France, said: “Yes, it’s true. I asked the coach for permission to bring some atmosphere into the dressing room and he said yes. This is normal at clubs but it’s never been the done thing with the national team.
